Banking is a Way of Life
You have probably been banking some of your hard earned cash from the time your mom and dad gave you a piggy bank for Christmas and you helped fill it with change by doing odd jobs.
Banking of today, although, on a larger scale is much the same. You work for money, get paid, put most of your money in your checking account and save the balance in your savings account hoping it will stay there. There are various types of banking such as the large commercial banks. These comprise most of the banking systems in the world today. They offer many different types of services to their customers. There are debit accounts, credit accounts, savings accounts and they also operate internationally.
Then, there are the savings and loan institutions which are smaller but offer loans and mortgages to their customers who then repay their loans back to them. Next, are the credit unions formed by a group of people who may work for the same company, and limit who can join the credit union to that criteria (work for same company). A credit union is a not for profit organization which is governed by board elected members.
People deposit their money into these banking institutions and the bank loans out money to customers which when paid back (with interest) is the bank's major way of earning their money. Banking makes the world go around and because you put your money into the bank, has helped someone else to purchase a home or begin a business which may excel beyond any one's imagination. Because of the recent housing crisis many banks were purchased by other larger banks because those with mortgages defaulted on their loan payments.
Banks have now decided to diversify their lending, not just put all their loans into the housing industry. It shows you that no matter how large an institution is, even they can make decisions which will have a huge bearing on if a particular bank stays in business or not. Many home town banks are very steady in customer growth, while credit unions have grown steadily, too, because people have simply switched from a bank to the credit unions.
