Risk Management Insurance and Who Needs It

Many companies are now choosing to purchase risk management insurance in an effort to protect their assets. This type of policy offers protection in the event the company or organization is sued due to their activities. Damages may be either economic or infrastructure-based and, in most cases, are external or internal as defined by the enterprise. The purpose of this policy is to assess and mitigate any risks associated with functions performed by the company. Although companies strive to reduce these risks to zero, they are still present. In the event something does go wrong, the third party insurer steps in to make the necessary payment.

When setting up a risk management insurance policy, a company will need to sit down and identify all assets. Once this is done, a determination will need to be made. Those assets which are most critical to the company are identified and the company identifies any threats that may appear. Next a calculation will be done to determine the possibility of these events occurring. Once this has been done, the insurer can determine the likelihood that this event may occur. The lower the risk, the less the policy will be.

Assets to be considered during this process may include the company buildings, assets and customer base. The company issuing the policy will be involved in this process. The insurer will also do an independent analysis of these assets as well as the risk factors to be insured against. Not only will natural occurrences be considered, but man-made ones also. This may include a threat from a rival business which the insurer will factor into the premium.

An insurer reduces his risk by working with a number of companies. This spreads the risk over a large area so the chances of multiple payments being required at one time are reduced. The goal of the insurer is to insure as many businesses as possible while paying out very little. Risk management is important for insurers in that they can make a profit when selling this type of policy. Businesses choose to purchase it because it reduces their exposure in the event of a lawsuit. Every business should consider purchasing this type of policy and see if it would be beneficial. Most will find that it is.
