America's Credit Rating Gets Downgraded
Standard and Poor's (S&P) has downgraded America's credit rating from AAA to AA+. It ended the nation's 94-year streak as a triple-A borrower. The rating may be even lowered further to AA if required steps are not taken. This means, America is no longer among the list of risk-free sovereign countries.
The legal limit on the total amount of debt the US government can have in order to pay it treasury bills is known as debt ceiling. And the ceiling has been raised further recently which led to the down-gradation.
Now, the government has $14.3 trillion of debt which is more than 100% of its Gross Domestic Product or GDP. At present, the unemployment rate of USA is over nine percent which means over 13.9 million people are unemployed. With current credit rating, America's Economy may be affected adversely.
It has already created volatility in the stock markets. Moreover, there might be long term consequences as well on the monetary and fiscal policies.
